Your pet’s the best, and you’ve probably already let them know that. But what if you had specific days throughout the year just to do something extra special with them? Obviously, you don’t need any justification to spoil your pet, but holidays are a good excuse to do something a little more elaborate or out of the ordinary. We’re not just talking about your pal’s birthday or even National Pet Parent Day — there’s a whole bunch of dog and cat-themed holidays you likely haven’t even heard about!

These lesser-known pet holidays tend to fly under the radar, but you’ll definitely want to add at least a few to your calendar each year. Here’s what they are and when, plus some tips for celebrating with your furry family member.

1. National Dress Up Your Pet Day

When: January 14

Dress Up Your Pet Day is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a day to pick out a special outfit just for your furry friend and show off how handsome they are! Maybe take a dapper photo or two (or several) to share with friends and others on social media.

Just be sure to only use costumes designed for pets and practice safety. Not every pet does well being dressed up either, so always pay close attention to how your buddy is feeling and be prepared to take off any outfits they’re not comfortable in. At the end of the day, your pet’s well-being matters far more than any cute photo of them.

2. Walk Your Dog Month

When: All of January

All dogs need daily exercise, and for most, this includes routine walks. Or at least it should. January is an entire month dedicated to walking your dog and increasing awareness of the importance of canine exercise. The goal here is to walk your pup for at least 30 minutes daily. By “celebrating” this awareness month at the start of each year, you can help you and your pet get into good habits for the following months.

3. National Drink Wine with Your Cat Week

When: Third full week of February

No, this doesn’t mean splitting a bottle of your finest chardonnay with your feline friend (and if kitties could drink wine, we think they’d prefer Moscato…). Instead, “Drink Wine with Your Cat Week” is a lighthearted, unofficial pet holiday that combines the enjoyment of wine with the companionship of your feline friend. It’s a playful celebration of the little things in life, i.e. spending quality time at home with your pet. As you may have guessed, a typical celebration involves cat owners kicking back with a glass of wine while cuddling or playing with their cat.

4. What if Cats & Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day

When: March 3

Some argue that this isn’t even a real pet holiday, but you know what’s also not real? Dogs and cats having thumbs. They’re perfect just the way they are of course, so consider this special day a nod to their flawless, adorable paws. Also called What if Pets Had Thumbs Day, this humorous holiday is the ideal time to give your pet extra scratches, throw a toy to them, pick up and hold out a treat for them — all the things you can do to help them out because you do, in fact, have opposable thumbs.

5. National Best Friends Day

When: June 8

National Best Friends Day isn’t pet-specific, but who cares? It’s the perfect day to celebrate your pet, a.k.a. your animal best friend! To celebrate, spend some quality time with your pet, gift them a new toy, and be sure to provide plenty of extra belly rubs and snuggles! If you have a dog, you may want to surprise them with a trip to their favorite park. For a feline friend, be sure to play with them and maybe build a blanket nest for them to take an extra-special afternoon nap in.

Want to really show your best friend how much you care? Consider protecting them with pet insurance if you haven’t done so already.

6. Take Your Dog to Work Day

When: The Friday after Father’s Day

Hate leaving your pal at home when you head into the office? On Take Your Dog to Work Day, consider bringing them with you! Maybe they’ll even help inspire some of your best work yet. Note that this dog-friendly holiday only applies if your workplace is okay with pets coming into the office. Some may make a special exception for Take Your Dog to Work Day, but always check first!

In 2024, Take Your Dog to Work Day falls on Friday, June 21.

7. Pet Health Insurance Month

When: All of September

This month is a time to highlight the importance of, you guessed it, having quality health insurance for your pets. If your pet is currently uncovered, it’s an opportunity to explore different insurance plans that can help manage the costs of surprise vet bills. During this month, veterinary clinics, pet insurance companies, and animal welfare organizations offer valuable information and resources. The goal is to educate pet owners about the benefits of pet health insurance, making it easier to help all beloved pets receive the care they need to stay healthy and happy.

8. National Pet Obesity Awareness Day

When: The second Wednesday of October

Most pet owners know that obesity isn’t great for the health of dogs and cats. But many still don’t know the extent of the health risks involved or what to do if one’s pet does become dangerously overweight. Fortunately, this day in October is here to help. Not only does it aim to raise awareness about the health risks associated with pet obesity, but it’s a day to take a look at what you’re actively doing to promote a healthy weight in your pet. Celebrate by assessing your pet's weight, consulting your vet for a balanced diet and exercise plan, and engaging in fun exercise activities like walking or playing fetch. Feeling social? Consider participating in a local pet event or sharing your journey online to inspire others.

In the meantime, we’ve got your back if you need tips for how to help your pet lose weight safely.

9. National Senior Pet Month

When: All of November

Pets of all ages are worthy of celebrating! And that’s exactly what National Senior Pet Month, celebrated every November, does. This time of year shines a spotlight on our older furry friends and all the things that make them special. It also spreads awareness about their unique needs so they can stay active and healthy throughout their golden years. Pet owners are encouraged to focus on their aging companions' well-being and happiness with tips, resources, and special events to support senior pet care. As if you really need any excuse to show your older dog or cat some love, this is the perfect time to be extra doting.

10. Celebrate Shelter Pets Day

When: December 5

This truly meaningful pet holiday is like a big, warm hug for all the furry pals who found their forever homes from shelters. Celebrating is simple; just show your own shelter pet some extra appreciation for their presence in your life. If you want to spread awareness, you can also post their adoption story on social media to help inspire others to give homes to pets who need them.

And hey, if you're looking to expand your fur family, shelters often have special events on this day — maybe you'll find your next lovable friend!
