How does kitten insurance work?

Pet insurance provides a health insurance policy that helps cover surprise vet bills for rambunctious kittens. You will pay a monthly premium and in return receive 90% coverage for all new, unexpected illnesses and injuries for the life of your kitty. And we can even pay your vet directly at checkout, so you don’t have to hassle with paperwork or wait on reimbursement.

See how Trupanion helped Snow

Snow, a 5-month-old Siamese kitten, was found with several leg injuries. We received a $3,611 claim for her treatment.

Based on the invoice:

$3,611

Trupanion paid at checkout:

$3,092

Snow's parent paid:

$518

Total invoice based on a real member plan with 90% coverage on eligible costs and a $100 deductible applied. See our policy for full coverage details.

Is kitten insurance worth it?

Kitten illnesses and injuries can cost more than you think. As we've learned while paying $6,610,848.36 last year to treat kitten illnesses and injuries, pet parents often can't plan or budget for their kitty's surprise health treatment costs.

Recently claimed conditions for kittens under 1:

  • $24,569 - treatment for 10 month old Bingus after a car accident
  • $17,916 - surgery to remove the blockage in Willow's small intestine
  • $16,703 - treatment for Bruce's kidney failure

Got questions? We have answers!

If your kitten faces any new, unexpected injuries or illnesses, Trupanion can help pay for the cost of their treatment — from diagnostic testing and medications to surgeries and everything in between. No pet parent should ever have to compromise on their kitten's care, which is why our coverage is tailored to have your pet's back no matter what.

We love when our members are informed. Learn more about your fully comprehensive coverage.

We’re here to help you pay for new, unexpected illnesses and injuries, which are difficult to budget for, instead of expected routine check-ups or preventive care. These expenses are often more affordable than emergency care, so why pay more for things you can budget for? Injuries and accidents, on the other hand, can become costly very fast. Without kitten insurance, some pet parents have to choose between their kitten’s health and staying afloat financially.

The things we don’t cover include:

  • Wellness or preventive care
  • Pre-existing conditions or anything that showed signs before you started your 30-day trial
  • Elective or cosmetic procedure (ear cropping or dew claw removal)
  • Exam fees
  • Sales tax (where applicable)

If your veterinary hospital is among the many that accept Trupanion VetDirect™ Pay, all you need to do is tell your hospital that you have Trupanion coverage, and they’ll be able to submit your invoice right at checkout, with processing and payment often taking just seconds.

Going to a hospital not set up for VetDirect™ Pay? No problem! You can also file online through your account or submit manually by downloading a claim form and we'll reimburse you as quickly as possible — 63% of claims are paid within 24 hours!

We adjust your monthly cost to keep up with advances in veterinary care — not just because your pet had a birthday. Most providers also use your kitten getting older and your coverage usage as an excuse to charge more. We don’t. Once you join Trupanion, your monthly cat insurance coverage cost will never go up based on your pet’s age or the number of claims you submit.

You may feel drawn to providers that offer low rates, but be careful of this bait-and-switch. A cheap monthly price will likely increase and can come with a catch. Many providers offer low premiums to start and then raise rates once you claim a condition, making it difficult to switch companies for a lower rate.

That's why we design our kitten health insurance with the entire life of your pet in mind. As unpredictable as they are, we're here to help keep their medical care costs as surprise-free as possible by covering everything from kittens eating plants they shouldn't to elderly cats who've developed chronic conditions. And unlike other plans, Trupanion has no payout limits!

Kitten parenting should be fun!
