What isn’t covered by Trupanion?

At Trupanion, we understand that your furry friends are more than just pets; they’re family. While we strive to offer truly exceptional coverage to keep pets healthy and happy for life, there are a few areas not included in our policy. Getting to know what’s not covered under a Trupanion policy now will help prevent unpleasant surprises later on and enable you to better plan for your pet’s health and wellbeing.

Types of things a Trupanion policy does not cover:

Exam fees & taxes

These costs, where applicable, are not included in your plan as they are costs you can more easily plan for as a pet parent.

Wellness, routine, & preventive care

Because services like flea and tick control, spay/neuter procedures, and vaccinations are routine for pets, they are not covered by Trupanion.

Any pre-existing conditions

Any conditions that were diagnosed or showed clinical signs before your coverage began are not eligible for reimbursement.

Preventable conditions

Some issues, such as certain parasites and dental problems that arise from missed routine cleanings, are also excluded.

However, don’t let this deter you! Choosing pet insurance with Trupanion means you’re investing in peace of mind for unexpected health issues that are difficult to foresee. Imagine the relief of knowing that if your pet faces an accident or serious illness, you have the support to provide them with the best possible care without the stress of an unexpected veterinary bill.

And as a devoted pet parent, you want the best for your four-legged friend. But what happens when unexpected medical expenses arise? That's where Trupanion's pet insurance comes in, offering assistance with pet medical bills for surprise conditions. This helps ensure your pet receives top-notch care when they need it most.

Keep in mind that no pet insurance provider covers everything. While we offer some of the most robust coverage available, we encourage you to compare providers to see first-hand how we stack up.

How do I know which specific conditions aren’t covered by my Trupanion policy?

The last thing we want to do is keep you in the dark. To prevent unwelcome surprises with your coverage, we want to let you know everything upfront that’s not able to be covered. Here’s how it works: when you sign your pet up for Trupanion coverage, you can request a Medical Record Summary that details your pet’s health history. This report also lists any pre-existing conditions specific to your pet. All of the conditions listed in this report will not be covered, so you can rest easy knowing what will be.

And if you’re like many new pet parents, your pet may not actually have anything on their report at the time your Trupanion coverage begins! The fewer pre-existing conditions there are, the more future eligibility for you. That said, many pet parents with older pets or dogs and cats with multiple pre-existing conditions still tend to find their Trupanion coverage valuable for any new, unexpected illnesses or injuries that may come their way.
