What is pet insurance?

A good pet health insurance plan is like a safety net for your furry friend, covering a significant portion of their veterinary bill if they get sick or injured. Similar to health insurance for yourself, pet insurance can provide financial protection and peace of mind for pet owners facing surprise medical expenses. And Trupanion has been protecting pets for over 25 years!

What does pet insurance cover?

Coverage varies between providers, and some have more limitations than others. At Trupanion, we provide robust coverage for all new and unexpected illnesses, injuries, accidents, and even unidentified issues. We also cover diagnostic tests, advanced dentistry, medications, and so much more.

How pet insurance works

With traditional pet health insurance, you pay your entire bill upfront, then wait for reimbursement–and many policies also impose coverage limits and payout caps. But at Trupanion, we believe in protection without limits. No payout limits. No annual limits. No lifetime limits.

Is pet insurance worth it?

You can budget for your pet’s routine veterinary care, but what happens when they suddenly get sick or eat something they shouldn’t? Trupanion pet insurance covers surprises so you can just say ‘yes’ to treatment and focus on what matters most - getting the best care for your pet.

Frequently asked questions

Chances are, yes! There are just two basic requirements to sign your pet up with Trupanion:

  • All cats and dogs under 14 years of age are eligible to enroll for lifelong coverage.
  • You live in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico (including US and Canadian military bases).
Please note that we welcome dogs and cats of every shape, size, and breed. We’re here to provide top-quality pet insurance coverage to as many pets as possible so they can live long, happy and healthy lives.

Every pet is different and so is the cost of their insurance. A two-year-old golden retriever in Chicago might have a different monthly cost than a five-year-old female Siamese cat in a rural region. The veterinary care available in your area can also be a determining factor. We encourage you to get a quote or give us a call for a better picture of what your cost with Trupanion will be.

Factors that affect monthly cost

  • Deductible amount
  • Pet species (i.e., is your pal a dog or cat?)
  • Pet gender
  • Location
  • Pet age (at enrollment - we never raise costs simply because a pet has a birthday)
  • Breed
  • Typical veterinary costs for similar pets

But beware of the fine print! Low-cost coverage can mean low quality coverage. Unlike Trupanion, not all providers offer transparent protection.

Veterinary emergencies and chronic illnesses can be devastating to your budget. After all, it’s easy to plan for your pet’s routine, expected health costs, but you can’t predict things like a torn ACL, cancer, or even a swallowed toy. Without any safety net in place, the necessary treatments for these conditions may not only be expensive — they may be out of reach. Even a pet savings account often fails to accommodate for just how much veterinary treatment can cost (especially with emergencies) and how immediate care is needed.

With a good pet insurance plan, you don’t have to worry about surprise illnesses and accidents impacting your budget. While it’s impossible to know just how much you may end up saving in out-of-pocket treatment costs with Trupanion, peace of mind is valuable on its own.

Signing your pet up early is a great place to start! Younger dogs and cats are less likely to have pre-existing conditions that are ineligible for coverage.

That’s not to say older pets aren’t worth covering, mind you. Enrolling your pet sooner rather than later will still result in future eligible conditions being covered. And unlike other pet insurance providers with earlier cutoff ages, Trupanion welcomes new dogs and cats up to age 14!

Keeping up with routine veterinary care is another way to ensure you’ll get the most out of your Trupanion plan. Since preventable conditions are not covered, it’s important that you bring your pet in for regular checkups, vaccines, and dental cleanings. And like any responsible pet owner, you’ll also be expected to stick with a monthly flea and tick prevention plan.

Ultimately, the best way to get value from your coverage is to actually use it and see the value in action! If you’re unsure about something being covered, you can always reach out to our team any day of the year, 24/7.

We have made the deliberate choice not to cover routine care, wellness, or preventive care costs. This includes things like wellness checkups, flea and tick control, and all all exam fees. There is a specific reason for why we do not cover these things, and it’s because we want you to get the most value out of your pet insurance coverage.

When it comes to your pet’s wellness care, we don't believe that we should charge you extra for something that you can expect. Since you know your pet needs routine veterinary care, it’s something you can actually budget for. And when you can budget for wellness care costs, it doesn’t make sense to pay a middle man more to give that same benefit back to you. Trupanion was founded to help pets get the health care they need when surprise illnesses and injuries occur, not to help with regular costs you can predict.

Of course! While we’ll be sorry to see you go, we understand that things in life change. You can cancel your Trupanion policy at any time, for any reason.

Have more questions about how Trupanion works and what to expect with your plan? Feel free to reach out to us at any time. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to answer any and all questions.
