What doesn’t pet insurance cover?

Pets are unpredictable, but their health insurance shouldn’t be. We cover what many providers charge extra for or don’t cover at all, however we want to keep you informed by explaining the few things that aren’t covered.

Common things not covered by pet insurance

Like many other pet insurance providers, we don’t cover the following:

Vet exam fees & taxes

These costs, where applicable, are not included in your policy as they are costs you can more easily plan for as a pet parent.

Wellness & routine care

Because things like parasite prevention, spaying/neutering, and vaccinations are routine pet care costs, they do fall outside of coverage.

Pre-existing conditions

Anything that existed or showed signs before your pet insurance became active are not eligible for coverage.

Preventable conditions

Some issues, such as certain parasites and dental problems that arise from missed routine cleanings, are also excluded.

What about pets with pre-existing conditions?

While other pet insurance providers may leave things to guesswork, we want you to be informed. With Trupanion, you can request a Medical Record Summary when you enroll that details your pet’s health history. This report lists your pet’s pre-existing conditions, so you get a clear picture upfront of what won’t be covered going forward.
