If your veterinary hospital is among the many that accept Trupanion Vet Direct Pay, then you don’t need to worry about filing claims. All you need to do is tell your hospital that you have Trupanion coverage, and they’ll be able to submit your invoice right then and there, with processing and payment often taking just seconds. Veterinary hospital not set up to accept direct payments from Trupanion? No worries! You can still submit a claim through us directly, and it’s easy. After you take your pet to the vet, there are two ways you can do this.

We recommend using a bank account for the fastest claims payments. Using a bank account allows us to expedite the claims process by speeding up reimbursement delivery. With direct deposit, you won't need to wait for a check in the mail or take it to the bank. Bank accounts also safeguard your policy from lapsing where credit cards will eventually expire and can become frozen or cancelled. No, we do not offer multi-pet discounts, however, this is due to our belief in transparent and fair pricing for all members. While we understand that other pet insurance providers may offer a “bulk rate” for multiple pets, the truth is that this often results in members with solo pets having to make up the difference by paying higher costs. Likewise, multi-pet discounts can be low upfront, but prices can quickly increase over time as pets get older and/or veterinary claims are filed. At Trupanion, we want to be fair to all of our members (humans and pets alike!). Rather than unnecessarily raising rates and offering various discounts, we strive to offer all customers the lowest possible premiums across the board.

What are hereditary and congenital conditions?

Trupanion covers hereditary and congenital conditions, so it’s important to understand what these are in order to make sure you’re getting the most out of your pet’s plan. Hereditary conditions are diseases or disorders inherited genetically. They may or may not be present from birth. Congenital conditions are diseases or disorders that are present since birth. They may or may not be genetic, meaning some congenital conditions are also hereditary conditions and vice versa. When a congenital condition is not genetic, it may be the result of a developmental issue or injury that occurred at any stage prior to birth. Certain breeds of dogs and cats are prone to specific congenital conditions.

Are there restrictions for pets fed a raw diet?

No! We do not restrict coverage eligibility for dogs and cats who are fed a raw diet, also sometimes referred to as an ancestral diet. That said, it is important to note that raw pet food diets are not included under Trupanion’s food coverage. Eligible items here include specific pet foods prescribed and authorized by a licensed veterinarian for the treatment of an applicable illness or injury.

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions afflicting pets, and as such, it’s always important to know upfront if your pet insurance covers it.

Yes! Your Trupanion coverage can be used for prescription pet foods when they are specifically prescribed or recommended by your licensed veterinarian for the treatment of a covered condition. We cover half the cost of up to 60 days worth of prescription food to make things easier for you and your pet.
